Need help finding your lost super?
With more than $18 billion in ‘lost’ superannuation accounts in Australia, the chances are that some of it may be yours.
Some of your super benefits may be recorded as ‘lost’ if
your super fund can’t contact you, and if your account hasn’t received
any contributions in the past 5 years. If this is the case, your
benefit is transferred by the fund to the Australian Tax Office.
The good news is that searching for lost super accounts is now quick and easy.
All you need is your name, tax file number and date of birth. Just go to the Australian Taxation Office SuperSeeker website and use this information to search for any lost accounts. You can also ring the ATO SuperSeeker help line on 13 28 65.
No luck?
If you didn’t find any lost super accounts, that doesn’t
mean that there aren’t any out there in your name that you’ve forgotten
about or haven’t got around to combining with your other accounts. Sure,
it can take some time and effort to track these down, if they exist,
but right now they could be costing you extra account keeping fees so
it’s likely to be worth it in the end.
